After 5,000 years of dormancy, a volcano erupted in 1973 on Heimaey, one of a group of islands off Iceland known as Westmann Islands. Hot ash and flowing lava forced the evacuation of the only town-also called Vestmannaeyjar-and enlarged Heimaey by almost 2.6 square kilometres (about 1 square mile).
