Grand Countryside Tour

Outline Itinerary

  (For London passengers)
Day 1:

fly from the UK to Keflavik, transfer to Hotel Hlid near the village of Hveragerdi about a 90 minute drive from Keflavik and check in for a 4 night stay. This tourist class hotel has just 21 rooms all with private facilities. The hotel also has a TV lounge, bar and hot tub.

Day 2:

explore the ‘ Golden Circle’ route and visit two-tiered Gullfoss, Geysir and Thingvellir, site of the ancient assembly. Also walk around the rim of a crater.

Day 3:

travel via the remote and rugged south coast of the Reykjanes Peninsula to the geothermal area of Krisuvik. Hopefully spot puffins on the nearby bird cliffs before continuing to another geothermal wonder - the Blue Lagoon. Stroll and take pictures and if you wish to take a dip in the therapeutic waters, the optional cost for a swim is approximately £15.

Day 4: visit Reykjavik. Spend time seeing the sights, the shops - try out one of the many restaurants or coffee shops, perhaps visit a museum or gallery or if you prefer, take an optional whale watching trip (approx. £40) or go riding on a pure bred Icelandic horse (approx. £35).
Day 5:

set off for Seljalandsfoss, a cascading waterfall which looks fabulous from every angle. The adventurous can walk behind its shimmering curtain. Travel along a rough track passing close to a glacier where a lagoon has formed as the ice retreated. Icecapped volcanoes, rising to 1500 meters, surround the Thorsmork Valley. The whole area is scored by valley glaciers and swift rivers. Explore this dramatic wilderness on foot. If time allows, visit to one of Iceland’s famous geothermal swimming pools – great fun and a relaxing way to end the day (optional, entry around £3). Check into Hotel Dyrholaey for 3 nights. A small, rural hotel with 55 rooms, each with private facilities.

Day 6: head east crossing the sand plains of Myrdalssandur to Kirkjubaejarklaustur – stop here to see the lava remains from the eruption of 1783. Continue to Skaftafell National Park and walk to its glacier then carry on to the stunning glacial lagoon, Jokulsarlon and take a cruise amongst its icebergs (optional cost approx. £25).
Day 7:

reach the Myrdalsjokull glacier after traversing glacial outwash plains. Optional snowmobile excursion (approx. £87 per person, based on two sharing a machine). Carry on to Skogar for an optional visit to the folk museum (approximately £6). Nearby, approach the foot of the spectacular 60 m high Skogafoss. On a clear day, you may be able to see the Westman Islands offshore.
