Itinerary

|
| Day 1: |
fly from the UK to Keflavik and transfer by coach to the Snaefellsnes Peninsula and Grundarfjordur, a fishing village ringed by dramatic mountains. Two nights at Hotel Framnes, a small hotel by the harbour.
|
| Day 2: |
enjoy a day of contrasting scenery: icescoured fjords and the mystical snow-capped volcano of Snaefellsnes. Walk a scenic path past dramatic basalt columns, blow holes, rock arches and bird-covered cliffs on this sometimes wild and windswept coast. Evening talk at the hotel. |
| Day 3: |
morning visit to a farm that cures ‘hakarl’ (an Icelandic shark delicacy). Afternoon boat trip around Breidafjordur’s many islands which teem with seabirds, including puffins (optional trip approx. £40). Travel north to Eyjafjordur and stay 4 nights at the relaxed and informal country guesthouse, Ongulsstadir, near the head of Iceland’s longest fjord.
|
| Day 4: |
continue to Lake Myvatn and spend the day enjoying Iceland’s best-known region of natural beauty, also a prime bird watching location. See moon-like craters, surreal lava formations, hissing steam vents and bubbling mud pools.
|
| Day 5: |
visit the fishing town of Husavik including the fascinating Whale Museum, (optional entry £6) then follow the scenic coast road to Asbyrgi, a curious horseshoe-shaped gorge and the Jokulsa Canyon National Park. Enjoy the awesome spectacle of Iceland’s most powerful waterfall, Dettifoss. Optional horse riding(approx £40).
|
| Day 6: |
visit Akureyri with the chance to take an optional whale watching boat trip in Eyjafjordur, including a visit to Hrisey Island (approx £35). Spend the remainder of the afternoon in Akureyri.
|
| Day 7: |
take a dramatic journey across the Kjolur mountain route south to Reykjavik, traversing the rugged, uninhabited highlands and visiting the Hveravellir geothermal area. A short stop will be made at Gullfoss and Geysir. In early summer the coastal route is taken instead. Overnight in Reykjavik.
|
| Day 8: |
transfer to Keflavik for the return flight to UK.
|
| Note: |
Please note due to differences in flight schedules Manchester passengers will have two extra nights at the beginning and one night at the end. |
