The holiday is based at Hotel Myvatn in Skutustadir located on the south shore of the lake among the area’s renowned pseudocraters. A whole range of fantastic volcanic features, including extraordinary lava pillars, steam vents, hot springs and mud pools are scattered around the lake.
A tour of the natural wonders of Lake Myvatn is included during your stay but the rest of your time is free to enjoy a wide variety of optional activities, for which the frozen lake and its surrounds provide an inspiring and safe venue. There are snowmobile rides, superjeep safaris, a go-kart course, ten-pin bowling on ice, horse riding trips, even a horse drawn sleigh ride, all arranged through the hotel. Thermal suits, boots and crash helmets are provided free of charge for some of the outdoor activities. Please note the temperatures may be very cold at times and plenty of layers are the order of the day.
The peaceful rural hotel is cosy and comfortable (and the hot chocolate is a speciality!). There is a bar in the main dining room but little else in the way of nightlife, though we think you’ll agree that the chance of seeing the spectacular northern lights more than makes up for this. The hotel also has a comfortable lounge, a TV/games room with a selection of DVDs, and its own sauna and outdoor hot tub for guests to relax in, maybe whilst watching the northern lights. There is also a heated indoor swimming pool a short walk from the hotel.
Trips to the Nature Baths, can also be arranged. This outdoor naturally heated pool complex, complete with two natural steam baths is the north’s answer to the Blue Lagoon - swimming here is quite an experience, especially when it’s snowing!
