Myvatn Nature Breaks

Throughout the year, Myvatn progresses through an ever-changing appearance from the full summer days to the slow pace of winter. Our 3-night nature breaks based in the village of Reykjahlid are offered on a full board basis and with no single supplement for most of the year providing excellent value for money.

Lake Myvatn has an allure all of its own at any time of year. Away from the bustle of town it’s big on surreal volcanic and geothermal wonders; abundant birdlife (summer); exhilarating outdoor activities and putting colour in your cheeks!

Our trips depart on a Thursday on a number of dates during the year and have been designed with flexibility in mind. Take a 45 minute flight from Reykjavik to Akureyri and then a scenic drive to a long weekend, made as relaxing or as active as you wish, through a number of optional excursions.
Stay 3 nights at the comfortable Hotel Reynihlid. Its 41 spacious bedrooms all equipped with private bathroom (either bath or shower), hairdryer, satellite TV, radio, telephone and tea and coffee making facilities - room service is available around the clock. All meals are included: a buffet breakfast; a light buffet lunch or picnic and 3-course evening meal with pure Icelandic water. There is also a fully licensed bar and comfortable lounge/games room.

Your holidays begins with a 2-hour sightseeing excursion that will help acquaint you with the area surrounding the lake and includes the bubbling mud pools and steam vents at Namaskard and Dimmuborgir, a collection of bizarre lava formations, trees and bushes that present a wealth of photographic opportunities.

You decide which activities to take part in during the remainder of your stay aided by the friendly reception staff. All excursions are bookable at reception and begin with a pick up from the hotel doorstep.
Summer or winter superjeep excursions are a fun and uniquely Icelandic way to explore the greater area, with visits to Dettifoss and Askja available. In the winter especially, you’ll see how amazing these high clearance vehicles are as they effectively glide over the deep snow drifts and tackle uneven ground with ease.

The area offers a variety of hiking and walking opportunities, especially during spring and autumn, for example the mountainous area around Namaskard, the impressive Hverfjall crater and the Krafla volcanic region with its geothermal power plant. Around the lake there are some excellent walking opportunities such as Hofdi and the Kalfastrond Peninsula.
Another way of exploring around the lake is on four legs - on a sturdy and very shaggy, Icelandic horse. Two popular guided tours are the visit to Askja volcano and Dettifoss, Europe’s most powerful waterfall. For wildlife enthusiasts, the trip to Husavik is a must (May to Sep). This trip out in to beautiful Skjalfandi Bay, in a converted oak fishing boat, goes in search of the resident minke whales and other cetaceans including humpback whales.
