Please note this itinerary is given as a guideline only - you are free to explore as you wish. Should you wish to extend your stay, please call our office team to discuss.
|
| Day 1: |
fly from the UK to Keflavik and collect your rental vehicle. After about 45 minutes drive out of the capital on Road 1 you’ll come to the ‘greenhouse’ town of Hveragerdi, where you may want to stop for some supplies. Just two miles further discover Gljufur, a collection of timber cabins surrounded by open meadows.
|
| Day 2-3: |
free to uncover some of the delights of the south. Geysir and Gullfoss are the closest places you might want to visit although a trip along the rugged south coast with its national parks and classic waterfalls is also within easy reach. |
| Day 4: |
drive through Thingvellir National Park to Hvalfjordur and the Akranes Peninsula. Continue through everchanging landscapes to Erpsstadir where you’ll check in for 4 nights. |
| Day 5-7: |
time to explore the beautiful Snaefellsnes Peninsula or perhaps venture into the unspolit West Fjords. |
| Day 8: |
head north-east, destination, the Lava House. Today’s 4-5 hour drive weaves its way through a kaleidoscope of landscapes, magnificent mountains and sweeping valleys dotted with a few farms and settlements. This is the land of the wild horse, purebred Icelandic horses to be precise. Stop off at the charming fjord-side town of Akureyri and stock up on supplies before continuing to the Lava House which is about another hour’s drive. This will be your home for the next 3 nights. |
| Day 9-10: |
head out to explore the immensely scenic Myvatn region – the lake itself with abundant birdlife and a nearby host of volcanic features, including the Nature Baths; Husavik, from where you may enjoy a whale watch trip out into the bay and the impressive Jokulsa Canyon which contains Europe’s most powerful waterfall, Dettifoss. |
| Day 11: |
for your return journey to Reykjavik you have several options: travel along the coastal road or, if you have a high clearance 4WD vehicle, return via one of the mountain routes of Sprengisandur or Kjolur. Alternatively, leave the vehicle in Akureyri and fly back to the capital – please call our office for a quotation. Overnight at Hotel Cabin in Reykjavik. |
| Day 12: |
transfer to Keflavik, or if you still have your vehicle drop it off at the airport, and check in for the flight back to the UK. |
