Enjoy the views as you fly into the regional hub of Isafjordur, set near Isafjardardjup, the enormous fjord which almost severs the area in two, and collect your rental vehicle. Stroll through the timbered old town with its interesting 18th century architecture; visit the great Maritime Museum and be sure to have a meal in what was the old Merchant’s House, now a modest fish restaurant with arguably the finest harbour view in the land.
Before reaching the next hotel, a detour en route should be made at Dynjandi, the beautiful fanshaped waterfall over 100 m high. Continue to the westernmost point of Iceland and indeed Europe - Latrabjarg - well-known to birding enthusiasts because of the 14 km of sheer cliffs, in places over 400 m high, which provide cliff-ledge homes to thousands of seabirds. Hikers like it here too, a popular route is across the top of the Latrabjarg cliffs to Iceland’s most impressive golden sand beach – Raudasandur, thankfully never crowded with people but often scattered with seals.
The next two nights are spent on the east coast of the region, after a drive inland through sheep farming territory. The rugged coastline at Strandir, is often littered with driftwood, washed ashore from Scandinavia and Siberia.
Kayaking, hiking and horse riding are available at Heydalur, the final night in the fjords and these optional activities can be booked locally. Continue to Isafjordur and fly back to Reykjavik for an overnight in the capital. Should you wish to extend your stay, again, our team are on hand to discuss your travel plans.
Please note due to the varying road conditions across the West Fjords, a 4WD vehicle is highly recommended. This itinerary can be added to other self-drive tours should you wish to extend your stay.
