Located around a broad bay, overlooking the offshore island of Nolsoy, the city's modern residential areas are spread over the surrounding hillside. Tinganes, the old centre, which is clustered around the harbour, is a delight to wander around and its many turf-roofed and tarred cottages are a unique sight.
With its museums, galleries and historic sites, Torshavn is the centre for Faroese culture, both past and present. There is a selection of places for dining out and some interesting local delicacies to sample, but don't go looking for too much in the way of night life - unless that is you visit the largest storm petrel colony in the world!
For the visitor there is plenty to see and do in the capital for a day or two, but most will want to explore further afield and see more of these delightful islands. A wide range of excursions are on offer, enabling you to experience the stunning landscapes, pretty villages, cultural sites, prolific bird life and hiking trails of this stunning island.
