Interview with Icehotel Wedding Couple

Zoë had always dreamt about a traditional wedding with a difference. So getting married in the magical setting of the Icehotel® in Sweden seemed like the perfect location. Each year a team of artists and designers create an entirely new Ice Chapel made from the crystal clear waters of the Torne River – making this an exquisitely unique wedding venue.

With the help of Discover the World staff, the Icehotel®’s wedding co-ordinator and friends and family, Zoë’s ideal wedding was planned. For those of you who are thinking about getting married at the Icehotel® you might like to read Discover the World’s exclusive interview with Zoë after her big day.

For the romantics out there please find Zoë’s description of what made her wedding in the Arctic so special below…

How was your wedding day?
The day was absolutely fantastic, a truly magical experience. Everything went so smoothly and was so well organised that I was able to really enjoy the day without worrying about any of the logistics.

Did your wedding day live up to your expectations?
Absolutely, actually even more so. We wanted something different, while still having the traditional ceremony with close family and friends. The setting was spectacular, and the ice hotel was stunning exceeding our expectations - we wouldn't have wanted to change a thing.

What were the best things about your special day?
Of course the ceremony. The Ice chapel was just so beautiful, it just felt so magical that I will never forget a minute of it.

Would you recommend the Ice chapel at the Icehotel® as a wedding venue?
If you are looking to have a traditional wedding, in a stunning winter wonderland setting, in your own chapel made of ice that changes every year it is built, then this is definitely the destination for you. I couldn't recommend it more.

Why do you think Sweden is such a unique wedding destination?
Right up in the Arctic circle, hundreds of miles away from what we would call civilisation, it doesn't get much more remote. The weather creates what is literally a winter wonderland, with cosy dark nights in beautiful log cabins made more romantic by the tranquility, remoteness and the chance of seeing the northern lights.

What was the best thing for you about getting married in Sweden?
It is not a million miles away from the UK, so doesn’t require lengthy flights for the people that are important to you, to attend the wedding. The traditional nature of the ceremony also allows you to wear the fairy-tale wedding dress you dreamed about, with the possibility to arrive on a reindeer pulled sledge.

What was the best thing about organising your wedding through DTW?
Everything was taken care of, so the pressure of organising everything from the venue right down to the flowers and hair-dresser appointments was lifted. We were able to talk through everything with friendly, helpful staff who had years of experience. Every advisor we spoke to had been to the Icehotel® so could really pass on useful advice and practical suggestions for our day. I would 100% recommend DTW to someone else thinking of visiting Scandinavia and/or getting married there.

If someone was considering getting married at the Icehotel®, what type of person do you think would find a wedding like yours ideal?
Somebody who wants a traditional wedding ceremony, but doesn't fancy the stress and expense of a big church wedding in the UK, with unpredictable weather. Maybe they have always dreamed of getting married in the snow, and literally having a white wedding. A unique chapel is built from scratch every year by designers and artists from all over the world only to stand for a few months before melting and rejoining the Torne river that gave it life in the first place. Only a few weddings take place a year - so what could be more special than having your own church built for you, that is shared by only a handful of other happy couples.

Would you like to go back and visit Sweden again, if so why?
We would love to go back. The Swedes are so friendly and the country so vast and diverse that there is so much to see and do all year round. We would love to go back an see the Icehotel next year to see each individually designed room and enjoy the peace and tranquillity. Sweden is so close the UK that travel time is really short, and with so much to do it makes it a great destination for a summer vacation, a winter get-away or a short city break.

Do you think Sweden makes a particularly romantic setting for a wedding? Without a doubt yes. We knew we wanted something a bit different for our wedding and we were not disappointed. There really is something special and romantic about the crisp cold winter air, being surrounded by a snow dusted landscape in the middle of nowhere with the person you love.

Do you have any other comments about your wedding day, honeymoon or Discover The World?
Apart from the above - I would just say that we have nothing but praise for the team at Discover The World, they were so friendly and helpful that they really helped make our wedding day special, and I would like to say a big thank-you to Discover The World for giving us the wedding of our dreams and for making it all go as planned.
