The attractive town of Tasiilaq on the island of Ammassalik, has a population of around 1600. It is ringed by huge jagged peaks, some of the highest mountains in the country in fact and, with its typical and very colourful houses dotted all over the hillside, it is the centre for the region. The Tasiilaq Museum is well worth a visit if you'd like to know more about the rich heritage of this fascinating region.
Several smaller settlements are scattered all over the district, amongst them Kulusuk, where the local Inuit population live from fishing and sealing, sometimes being away from home for a large part of the year. Here, more than anywhere else in Greenland, the traditional skills of carving have survived.
Hotel Kulusuk is on the eastern shore of the island and the stunning scenery and grandeur of Greenland are literally just outside the door! The hotel has a restaurant and bar. The delightful Hotel Ammassalik in Tasiilaq enjoys spectacular views over the ice-filled fjord and high mountains - it has its own lounge and bar. Both locations also offer a number of excellent hiking opportunities and various optional activities.
However, additional nights may be added in either destination, subject to flight schedules - please call our office for details. |
