Summertime Special

Itinerary

Day 1:

fly from the UK to Keflavik, transfer to Reykjavik and overnight at Hotel Cabin.

Day 2:

the tour starts with a trio of famous sites: historic Thingvellir (Almannagja, Hofdi), two-tiered Gullfoss and the Geysir geothermal area. Continue to the wilderness campsite and natural bathing pool at Hveravellir.

Day 3:

cross the uninhabited interior, reaching the north of Iceland. Time for an exhilarating rafting trip through the canyon of the Jokulsa Vestari. Camp in the town of Akureyri and sample the nightlife!

Day 4: whale watching and sea fishing in the scenic fjord of Eyjafjordur. Stop at Godafoss en route to Lake Myvatn. Camp for two nights overlooking the lake.
Day 5:

view the bird life and explore the natural wonderland of Myvatn, its volcanoes, lava fields and mud pools, on several short hikes. Optional sightseeing flights to Askja, Kverkfjoll, Krafla, Lake Myvatn and the Arctic Circle.

Day 6:

morning hike through Dimmuborgir lava pillars and up Hverfjall crater (3 hours) then drive the Tjornes coast road to Asbyrgi– camp for two nights in a huge wooded gorge. Optional horse riding.

Day 7: hike the Jokulsa Canyon Trail (3-5 hours) and marvel at its strange eroded features.
Day 8: visit the awesome waterfall Dettifoss and head for Askja, crossing a vast uninhabited lava and ash desert, once used to train NASA astronauts. Swim in the warm crater lake of Viti (meaning "hell"). Desert camp.
Day 9: travel east to the forested surrounds of Lake Logurinn. Lakeside camp and barbeque (weather permitting).
Day 10: travel through the dramatic East Fjords to Vatnajokull icecap. Iceberg cruise on a breathtaking glacial lagoon. Camp for two nights at Skaftafell.
Day 11: hiking in Skaftafell National Park (7 hours) with views of its glaciers, waterfalls and towering peaks.
Day 12:

ride a hay cart to Ingolfshofdi and see thousands of puffins, great skuas and guillemots (breeding season ends mid- August). Visit a tiny turf church and take the mountain track to Eldgja gorge. Camp amidst the riotously coloured landscape of Landmannalaugar and relax in a naturally hot river.

Day 13:

morning hike up Blahnukur peak (3 hours), past steam vents and eerie lava flows. Afternoon drive to the coast and the stunning 60 m high waterfall, Skogafoss. Overnight camp at Seljavellir.

Day 14:

the thrilling snowmobile ride on Myrdalsjokull icecap is a fitting climax to the holiday. Walk behind the impressive Seljalandsfoss falls and see the greenhouse village Hveragerdi, on the way back to Reykjavik – this is the end of the escorted tour. Overnight at Hotel Cabin.

Day 15: transfer to Keflavik for the return flight to the UK.
  Please note

Glasgow passengers require one extra night in Reykjavik at the beginning and three at the end of their holiday due to differences in flight schedules.
