| Riksgransen and its smaller neighbour Bjorkliden can be found deep within the Arctic Circle just north of Sweden’s Abisko National Park, almost on the border with Norway. They are very laid back and not at all like their Alpine cousins, relatively quiet in fact (great news for the ski lifts – no queues!) with people coming here for the natural attractions rather than the après ski scene and just ‘to be seen’. However, their secret is out and what the Swedes have known about for over 100 years is now beginning to attract people from all over Europe and beyond and they very much like what they find. Make sure you visit this season ahead of the crowd and experience it before it receives the world-wide recognition it so deserves.
The resorts’ proximity to the Norwegian coast is one reason why they have such a high precipitation and therefore over the winter months, are blessed with tremendous snowfalls - Riksgransen has over 3m annually! Being so far north means great chances of witnessing displays of the northern lights at the start of the season. In addition from mid May, the days get progressively longer until the midnight sun casts a golden light over the already stunning scenery. Great news for skiers – Bjorkliden is open until mid/late May and even in late June in Riksgransen, die-hard lovers of the white stuff can enjoy some ski lifts open at weekends until after midnight!
We offer 3, 4 and 7-night ‘SKIPACKS’ at either Riksgransen or Bjorkliden or if you prefer, you may combine a ski trip with a stay at the ICEHOTEL, see page 60. The proximity of the two ski resorts makes it easy to sample both as a train and local bus connects the two on a regular basis.
In both resorts you can ski directly to the majority of accommodation options straight from the slopes, conditions permitting, and ski shops and lifts are within easy walking distance from the main hotel reception areas so no need to struggle with your ski equipment getting on and off transfer buses. And all accommodation options have adequate storage facilities for your ski gear.
TRAVEL TO RIKSGRANSEN & BJORKLIDEN IS VIA KIRUNA, EITHER USING DIRECT FLIGHTS OR SCHEDULED FLIGHTS VIA STOCKHOLM
if you wish to extend your stay and/or add a night in Stockholm our reservations team will be happy to discuss your plans.
