Faroe Island Holidays

Introducing the Faroe Islands
A rich culture
The Faroe Islands were settled by Norsemen during the age of Viking expansion and discovery. Though suppressed through the centuries, the island’s language and culture have survived and nowhere more emphatically than in the traditional Chain Dance and St. Olav’s Day celebrations on the 29th July.

Museums, galleries, historical buildings and many beautiful churches can be visited as you explore the islands but most come here for the unspoilt scenery.

Plenty to see and do

The capital, Torshavn, is a surprisingly busy town, with a pleasing mix of old and new and a choice of accommodation for visitors, ranging from small guesthouses to hotels with a range of facilities. Many visitors choose Torshavn as the base for their holiday and a developed network of roads, bridges, tunnels and ferries makes access to the other islands easy, travelling by bus or hire car.

There are plenty of interesting guided excursions to choose from, including sightseeing by coach, walking and horse riding, while at sea you can enjoy boat trips, fishing and even scuba-diving. With hotels and guesthouses in the smaller towns and villages, a two or three-centre holiday is also an option.

The Faroe Islands is not a place for everyone – it is not known for its nightlife, grandiose architecture, luxury accommodation or abundant shopping (although there are always surprises, especially in the capital, Torshavn), but that is what makes it so endearing. It is a destination for lovers of nature – a land of contrasts - wild, serene and beautifully unspoilt. It almost feels like it is in a world of its own and the genuine hospitality of its people, coupled with some stunning panoramas should not be ignored.

Getting there is easy
Getting to the Faroe Islands is easy, with Atlantic Airways direct flights from London Stansted (during the high season) and from Aberdeen and London Heathrow (via Copenhagen) all year. During the summer months, you can travel by ferry from Aberdeen, via the Shetland Islands with P&O Scottish Ferries and Smyril Line. With the travel options available, it is simply to combine a trip to the Faroe Islands with a visit to Iceland and/or the Shetland Islands.
