| Finland’s modern capital, Helsinki is a mix of traditional Finnish culture, both eastern and western influence and has a character all of its own. Located on a peninsula surrounded on three sides by water, the main centre is built around the harbour. It is a foot-friendly city, even in winter and offers visitors plenty to see and do. |
The architecture is a mix of modern glass offices and shopping malls and impressive, more characterful buildings – a visit to the Senate Square to see the blue-domed Lutheran Cathedral is recommended. Helsinki has numerous parks and gardens, a wide variety of restaurants and other eateries, a lively nightlife with an ample choice of bars, cafés and clubs as well as some excellent museums and places of interest. In the winter, especially on sunny Sundays, the stretches of frozen sea between the city and Suomenlinna attract processions of walkers, ice fishermen, skiers, skaters and a lot of ducks!
