Regional Information

To help you decide between our holidays or plan your itinerary, the following pages are packed full of information about places to see around Iceland.

Reykjavik

Iceland's colourful capital is refreshingly different, compact and easy to explore. No wonder it has a reputation amongst discerning travellers as the place for a great weekend away - and it's only about 3 hours flying time from the UK. Clean, safe and welcoming to visitors, Reykjavik is also surprisingly affordable.

The city is set on a peninsula, surrounded by several hills that provide stunning viewpoints of the moody Reykjanes and Esja mountains beyond. The city is centred around Lake Tjornin and the fishing harbour, the latter often being packed out with fishing boats, around which are clustered shops, restaurants, pubs and cafes. Lining the quiet back streets are brightly painted homes, which glow with a warmth and prosperity you might expect from a nation whose standard of living is one of the highest in the world.

Full of life and local colour at any time of the year, the city hosts international festivals and sporting events but also has a lively culture of its own. There are museums to commemorate just about every interesting facet of the country and its history; galleries and concert halls that play host to an incredibly talented artistic community; a national opera and theatre together with shops and boutiques that range from the chic to the outrageous.

Award-winning restaurants pride themselves on creating sensational dishes including the freshest of seafood and mouth watering Icelandic mountain lamb - and in some wonderfully romantic settings. There is a lively cafe scene both day and night, perhaps not surprisingly since coffee is the national drink. Weekend nights are the time to join in Reykjavik's legendary pub and club culture, but plenty of stamina and a fat wallet may come in handy.

If you run out of things to do in the city, Iceland's big theme park is on the doorstep - nature itself, and plenty of it! There are many tempting excursions from the city to places of natural beauty such as waterfalls, geysers, mountains and glaciers, as well as historic sites and natural geothermal bathing pools.

Your holiday can be as flexible as you like - you choose how long you go for and where you stay when you book with us, but everything else can be arranged locally if you prefer. And, with our office in Reykjavik, we're on hand to help out at any time.
